About Us

Malta Medical School

Malta has a long and distinguished history related to Medicine. The first documented reference to Malta's involvement in healthcare dates back to the 14th century when a hospital under the name of Santo Spirto was opened in 1347. Following their arrival in Malta, the Knights opened the Sacra Infermeria in 1574 and from its very beginning, it was considered to be one of the best hospitals in Europe. The services offered were further enhanced when a school of Anatomy and Surgery was opened in 1676 by a decree of the Hospitaller Order of St John's Grand Master Fra Niccolo Cottoner, introducing the teaching of Anatomy in the Holy Infirmary of the Order of St John of Jerusalem to Malta. This makes our Medical School one of the oldest in the world.

Along the years Malta's reputation as an excellent centre for the provision of care was kept very much alive. The coming of the British in 1800 resulted in our University being run along English academic lines, a system which has been retained to date. The standards achieved by our medical school are evidenced by the fact that our medical graduates are to be found scattered all over the world occupying chairs and other important appointments in many prestigious institutions.

The School maintains a tradition of excellence in teaching and research and continues to expand its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Teaching is in the English language and small group teaching remains one of the Medical School's assets.

Conference logo

The 7th Malta Medical School Conference logo this year features the seal of the University of Malta Medical School. This medallion, in bronze, is 3.8 cm in diameter, (designer and engraver unknown), and was minted in 1976, to commemorate the tercentenary anniversary of the founding of the School of Anatomy and Surgery in 1676. The obverse, as depicted, shows the cotton plant (in reference to Grandmaster Cottoner who founded the School) along with the two serpents depicted in a different way from the traditional medical emblem. The inscription here reads 'SCHOLA ANATOMIAE AC CHIRURGIAE CONDITA MDCLXXVI, meaning 'School of Anatomy and Surgery – Founded 1676'. The reverse depicts the coat-of-arms of the University of Malta and the inscription 'ATHENAEUM MELITENSE - MCMLXXVI', meaning 'University of Malta - 1976'.

This medallion has recently been adopted as the seal of the University of Malta Medical School.
